Perplexity launched Personal Computer to macOS last month in an effort to compete with the likes of Claude Cowork and get ahead of Apple’s delayed, generative AI-powered Siri. The AI helper was previously only available to Perplexity customers on the $200 per month Max plan, but the business has recently made it available to all Mac users.
The company claims that anyone may download the new Perplexity macOS application and use Personal Computer “for everyday queries, attachments, and dictation.”” Perplexity highlighted that usage is connected to the credit limits of the Pro and Max plans.
According to the business, Personal Computer can run a tasks from local files, other programs, the web, and Perplexity’s own servers. It uses a variety of models to complete specialized tasks, including Gemini for deep research, Nano Banana for pictures, and ChatGPT “for long-context recall and wide search.” Unlike previous tools, Personal Computer will do the majority of the heavy lifting in the cloud rather than running totally locally, in order to reduce the load on the Mac.
The company says that you can run Personal Computer 24/7 on a Mac mini, as some people do with OpenClaw, and operate it remotely from an iPhone. Perplexity has also underlined that the assistant’s activities are auditable and reversible, so users should not be concerned about it mistakenly erasing precious family photos.
