M6 Mac Release Schedule: When to Expect Apple’s Next Macs

Apple’s next-generation M6 chip has already arrived in the new Mac mini, but the company is reportedly preparing to bring the chip to several other products. Here’s what the rumored M6 release timeline looks like for upcoming Macs, along with the next-generation iPad Pro.

This Fall: M6 MacBook Pro and M6 iMac

Apple is reportedly planning to introduce two more M6-powered Macs this fall, potentially in October or early November:

The upcoming MacBook Pro is expected to be limited to the 14-inch base model. According to Mark Gurman, Apple may skip M6 Pro and M6 Max variants. Instead, the next high-end chips could arrive as the M7 Pro and M7 Max in 2027.

The new iMac is also expected to receive a relatively modest update, with the M6 chip serving as the main change. Apple could also introduce a new selection of colors. Even without a major redesign, moving from the M4 to the M6 could provide a meaningful performance upgrade.

One product that does not appear to be part of the M6 lineup this fall is the rumored touchscreen MacBook Pro, sometimes referred to as the MacBook Ultra. While the device is also expected to arrive in the near future, reports suggest it could use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips rather than the M6.

Early 2027: M6 MacBook Air and M6 iPad Pro

Following the expected fall Mac launches, Apple’s next M6 updates could arrive in early 2027 with the MacBook Air and iPad Pro.

The M6 MacBook Air is reportedly planned for early 2027, with a launch potentially falling between February and April. Based on Apple’s previous release patterns, March could be a likely timeframe.

Beyond the processor upgrade, the next MacBook Air is not expected to receive many major changes. Reports suggest Apple will retain the current design introduced with the M5 model. An OLED display is reportedly not expected until at least 2028, meaning the display technology could remain unchanged for the M6 generation.

The iPad Pro could also receive an M6 upgrade in spring 2027. Apple last refreshed the iPad Pro in fall 2025 with the M5 chip, making an approximately 18-month update cycle consistent with the timing of the rumored next-generation model.

In addition to the M6 chip, Apple is reportedly considering a vapor chamber cooling system for the next iPad Pro. The addition could help the ultra-thin tablet maintain higher performance levels during sustained workloads.

M6 Could Bring Better Power Efficiency

The M6 chip could offer another important advantage for both the upcoming MacBook Air and iPad Pro: improved battery efficiency.

Apple says its M6 chip is built using a 2-nanometer process, which delivers improvements in both performance and power efficiency. If those gains translate to the upcoming devices, users could see longer battery life alongside faster performance.

For now, the release dates and specifications remain based on reports and rumors, so Apple’s final plans could change before the products are officially announced.
