Kia Begins “Full-Scale Attack” on Japan With New EV Debut

Kia has officially crossed the forbidden country by unveiling its first EV in Japan. The PV5 will spearhead Kia’s “full-scale attack” on the Japanese market, taking on Toyota, Honda, and Nissan on their home turf.

At the Japan Mobility Show in October, Kia announced its entry into the Japanese market. The PV5, Kia’s first electric van, will serve as a trailblazer as the company attempts to enter into Japan’s car industry.

Domestic automakers such as Toyota, Honda, and Nissan account for around 90% of new-car sales in Japan, which is why the country is frequently regarded as a “graveyard” for international brands.

Kia sees an opportunity to capitalize on Japanese manufacturers that have been slow to convert to electric vehicles, focusing instead on hybrids.

During the “Kia PV5 Official Launch Event for the Japanese Market,” the firm started accepting orders for the PV5 Passenger five-seater and the PV5 Cargo.

Kia stated that further variants, such as the PV5 Passenger seven-seater and PV5 Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), would be available soon. As it grows into new areas, it plans to introduce the larger PV7 electric van in 2028.

With a length of 4,695 mm, a width of 1,895 mm, and a turning radius of 5.5 m, Kia says the PV5 is well-suited to Japan’s limited roadways. It also includes a CHAdeMO charging method as standard, making it more competitive.

The Korean automaker expects the PV5 will offer “a new alternative in the Japanese electrified commercial vehicle market, where options are limited.”

With the Japanese government planning to convert 30% of new car sales to EVs by 2030, Kia is capitalizing on its PBV business.

Kia has partnered with Sojitz Corporation, one of Japan’s biggest general trading companies, to increase its operations in the region.

In April, it established Kia PBV Japan as a wholly owned subsidiary of Sojitz. Kia PBV Japan now has seven dealerships and 52 service centers.

Kia wants to roughly increase its footprint in Japan by the end of 2026, with 11 directly run stores and 100 service centers, with the goal of selling 1,000 electric vans. The company’s first directly managed dealership, Kia PBV Tokyo West, will open on Friday, May 15.

After introducing the PV5 to Japan for the first time in October, Kia announced plans to make a “full-scale attack” on the Japanese EV van market.

“Together with Kia PBV Japan, we will build long-term trust tailored to the needs of Japanese customers and establish ourselves as a reliable partner supporting the transition to electrification,” Sangdae Kim, head of Kia’s PBV division, stated.

The PV5 is already on sale in Europe, the United Kingdom, and South Korea, with plans to extend into other areas such as the Middle East this year.

Kia’s electric van has been a success so far, with 8,113 sold in the first quarter of 2026. In Europe, the PV5 represented 9.0% of the light commercial electric vehicle (eLCV) market.

By the end of the decade, the company hopes to sell 250,000 electric vans annually. Japan is likely to be an important market, despite the low availability of commercial electric solutions. Kia stated the PV5 might “also address social issues such as increased logistics, labor shortages, and regional transportation gaps.”
