Adobe Premiere, One of the iPhone’s Top Video Editors, Arrives on Android

Nearly a year after launching Premiere for iPhone, Adobe has expanded its redesigned mobile video-editing app to Android devices. The app, which spent several weeks in beta, is now officially available as the successor to Premiere Rush, which Adobe plans to discontinue support for on September 30.

Adobe senior vice president of design Eric Snowden says the response to the iOS version has been highly positive. The iPhone app currently holds a 4.8-star rating on the App Store from more than 25,000 ratings. For Android, however, Adobe focused on more than simply bringing the existing iPhone experience to another platform. The company wanted Premiere to feel specifically designed for Android.

A major part of that approach is compatibility across the wide variety of Android hardware available today. The app is designed to work across devices ranging from conventional smartphones such as Google Pixel models to Samsung foldable phones. On a foldable device, users can take advantage of the larger display by viewing their video footage on one side while accessing the multitrack editing timeline on the other.

Snowden says the work involved in optimizing Premiere for foldable devices could also provide useful experience for Adobe as it develops mobile editing experiences for future form factors.

Adobe has also optimized Premiere and several of its other applications—including Acrobat, Photoshop, and Lightroom—for Google’s newer laptop platform. These apps can take advantage of larger screens on those devices, although Adobe says they do not provide the same desktop-level experience available on Windows or macOS.

The company has also emphasized support for less powerful Android phones. Premiere requires at least 5 GB of RAM and Android 13 or newer, but Adobe says the goal was to make the application accessible beyond premium flagship devices.

“We wanted this to run on as many devices as possible,” Snowden says, explaining that the development team spent considerable time ensuring Premiere could work across a broad range of Android hardware.

When users open Premiere, their camera-roll footage is displayed on the home screen. They can then begin editing from scratch or select creator-designed templates covering categories such as lifestyle, beauty, and food.

The app offers both a simplified mini editor and a more advanced full editor. The mini editor allows users to quickly trim or replace clips and apply filters across their footage. Users can also export videos directly to YouTube Shorts without leaving the Premiere app.

For more detailed projects, the full editor provides a multitrack timeline. This allows creators to work with multiple layers and make more precise adjustments involving text, music, effects, and other elements.

Adobe has also incorporated several AI-powered tools. Enhance Audio can improve voice clarity while reducing background noise, while the voice-over feature lets users record narration through their phone’s microphone while viewing their footage in real time.

The app also includes Firefly-powered generative AI features such as Generative Fill, Image-to-Video, and tools for creating sound effects. These features use generative credits, and users may need a subscription if they exceed their available monthly credits.

Some capabilities have yet to arrive. Adobe says features such as Continue Editing, which will allow users to begin a project on mobile and continue it on desktop, are still in development. Support for Adobe Fonts is also listed as a future feature.

Unlike many Adobe Creative Cloud applications, Premiere on Android does not require users to sign in or subscribe to the company’s broader creative suite. Like the iPhone version, the mobile video editor is available for free.

Adobe says the decision is intended to reduce the barriers new users face when trying the application for the first time and make the editing experience more accessible and straightforward.
