MTV VMAs Draw Biggest Audience Since 2015 With 8.43 Million Viewers

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards delivered a significant increase in television viewership, drawing an estimated combined 8.43 million viewers across CBS and MTV on Sunday night, according to Nielsen Live+same day fast national figures.

The audience makes the 2026 VMAs the most-watched edition of the awards show since 2015, when the event averaged 12.73 million viewers on MTV. This year’s combined audience also represents a 51% increase from the 5.60 million viewers who watched the 2025 telecast across CBS, MTV and MTV’s encore presentation.

The preliminary figures could change once final Nielsen numbers are released.

The VMAs’ broadcast was affected by an NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys, which ran longer than scheduled and pushed the awards show’s CBS start time to 7:51 p.m. ET. The ceremony was held at Peacock Theater at L.A. Live and began at 4:30 p.m. PT before being tape-delayed for the CBS broadcast.

CBS accounted for the majority of the audience, averaging 7.61 million viewers, a 52% increase from the network’s 5.00 million viewers in 2025. MTV’s simulcast averaged 686,000 viewers, up 40% from 481,000 last year, while MTV’s encore drew 142,000 viewers, compared with 108,000 in 2025.

The ceremony also posted gains among key adult demographics. The VMAs averaged 3.11 million viewers among adults ages 25-54, marking the show’s strongest performance in the demographic since 2019, when it drew 3.55 million. The figure was up 34% from last year’s 2.32 million.

Among adults ages 18-49, the ceremony attracted 2.66 million viewers, its highest audience in the demographic since 2018 and a 32% increase from the 2.02 million recorded in 2025.

The show also averaged approximately 1.09 million viewers among adults ages 18-34, its best performance in that demographic since 2020 and a 46% increase from last year’s 751,000 viewers.

CBS also reported strong social-media activity surrounding the ceremony, with 31.1 million interactions and 159 million video views, representing an 8% increase in video views compared with 2025.

The 2026 VMAs featured a lineup of high-profile performances and special appearances. Madonna opened the ceremony alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, marking Madonna’s first performance at the VMAs in 23 years.

Taylor Swift was among the night’s major highlights, winning Video of the Year, receiving the MTV VMA Artist Director Award and premiering the music video for her new song “Patient Zero.”

Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award, while the ceremony also included tributes to Dolly Parton and George Michael. Other performers included GENER8ION, Gunna, Kacey Musgraves, Lisa, Raye, Shaboozey, Sienna Spiro, Sombr, Teddy Swims and Yung Lean.

Snoop Dogg hosted the 2026 VMAs. Gunpowder & Sky produced the special, with Van Toffler serving as producer. Jesse Ignjatovic of Den of Thieves, Barb Bialkowski and Bruce Gillmer were executive producers, alongside Barry Barclay and Floris Bauer. Melanie Block served as co-executive producer, with Gary Lanvy as co-producer.

Snoop Dogg also served as an executive producer alongside producers Sara Ramaker and Jasmin Ratansi. Jen Proctor was the executive talent producer.
