Microsoft this week announced Office 2024, a new standalone version of its productivity suite for Mac and PC users. Office 2024 is available now and offers an alternative for users who prefer a one-time purchase over the subscription-based Microsoft 365.
The new version includes updated versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook. These apps are a “locked-in-time” versions, meaning that unlike their Microsoft 365 counterparts, they won’t get ongoing feature updates.
For Mac users, Office 2024 brings several notable improvements, according to Microsoft. Excel now offers improved performance, especially when working with multiple workbooks open, while Outlook for Mac introduces customizable swipes designed to improve email management and work with the Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse.
PowerPoint adds new features such as Cameo, which lets you embed a live camera feed directly into a slide, and Recording Studio, for recording narration, animations, transitions, and hand-drawn notes. Additionally, Word and PowerPoint now support liking and replying to comments in collaborative documents.
According to Microsoft, Mac users will also benefit from an improved inking experience in OneNote, including a pen-centric full-screen view. Additionally, the suite now supports OpenDocument Format (ODF) version 1.4 in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Office 2024 is compatible with macOS Ventura, macOS Sonoma, and macOS Sequoia. Both a Microsoft account and an internet connection are required to install and activate the app suite. There are two editions available: Office Home 2024 costs $149.99 and includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. For $249.99, Office Home & Business 2024 also includes Outlook and commercial use rights. Both editions are currently available from retailers and the Microsoft website worldwide.
Although Office 2024 offers a no-subscription option, Microsoft continues to position Microsoft 365 as the recommended choice for users who want the latest features and regular updates. However, the standalone Office 2024 offers a familiar alternative for Mac users who prefer the traditional licensing model.
