Google Brings AI Skills to Google Chrome for Workflow Shortcuts

Google said on Tuesday that it will be introducing more AI capabilities to its Chrome web browser. It’s releasing a new tool called Skills, which allows users to save and reuse their favorite AI prompts that can be used across several web pages without having to input them again.

The feature is linked to Google’s incorporation of its Gemini AI into Chrome, which comes alongside a slew of new competitors in the browser ecosystem from businesses such as OpenAI (Atlas), Perplexity (Comet), and The Browser Company (Dia), among others.

Gemini currently allows users to ask questions about a website, summarize its content, and execute other tasks. Skills will take things a step further, allowing users to create AI prompts that can be accessed repeatedly with one click.

For example, Google says that if a user frequently asks Gemini to offer vegan substitutions when browsing recipe websites, they can now remember the prompt and reuse it across multiple web pages.

To use the feature, save the AI prompt as a Skill directly from your conversation history. The Skill can then be used again in Gemini in Chrome by typing a forward slash (/) or clicking the addition sign (+) button. The Skill will then run on the current web page, as well as any other tabs that have been selected.

These Skills can also be changed at any time using Google Notes.

In studies, the company discovered that early adopters utilized Skills for health and wellness (for example, calculating protein macros in recipes), shopping comparisons, and scanning and summarizing lengthy papers.

To help users in getting started with Skills, the business is introducing a Skills library, which will include popular tasks and processes in areas such as productivity, shopping, recipes, budgeting, and more. To use a pre-programmed Skill, users just add it to their Chrome stored Skills. The question can also be edited to tailor the Skill to a user’s specific need.

Like other Gemini operations in Chrome, Skills will prompt the user for confirmation before performing some actions, such as sending an email or adding an appointment to your calendar.

Skills will be available to Chrome desktop users that are signed in to their Google accounts starting today. The feature will initially function only if your Chrome browser’s language is set to English (US).
