Since iOS 17 allows third-party apps to store the new passwordless sign-in mechanism, 1Password revealed its plans to add passkey support to its iOS app earlier this year. Users of the iPhone and iPad are currently receiving the update with passkey support from 1Password as of the release of iOS 17 to the general public.
Passkeys are now supported by 1Password for iOS
The FIDO Alliance has recently developed the technology known as Passkey in conjunction with well-known businesses including Apple, Google, and Microsoft. It allows users to log in securely using techniques like facial recognition or biometrics in place instead of traditional passwords, doing away with the need to create and remember a passcode.
Users can now create and save passkeys using Safari and iCloud Keychain as of iOS 16. With iOS 17, third-party apps will now have access to this capability. One of the initial password managers to declare support for passkeys in its iOS app is the well-known 1Password.
According to Steve Won, chief product officer of 1Password, “Passkeys are the best form of passwordless authentication that balances security and convenience, and 1Password is committed to enabling all businesses and consumers to embrace them.” “With Google, TikTok, and GitHub turning on capabilities for passkeys this summer, billions of people around the world now have the opportunity to adopt this exciting technology.”
Users can organise credentials, manage and utilise passkeys on mobile apps and browser extensions, get passkey notifications through Watchtower, securely exchange passkeys, and adjust company rules thanks to the additional feature in 1Password. Users of 1Password will soon be able to open their password vaults with simply a passkey as well.
Of course, updating your iPhone or iPad to iOS 17 is necessary in order to utilise passkeys with 1Password. The App Store offers 1Password for free, however some functions call for a premium subscription.
