Now you can use Microsoft Notepad to generate your own text using artificial intelligence

A new AI-powered feature in Notepad that lets users create text inside documents is being tested by Microsoft. This functionality, currently being tested in Windows 11 through updates available to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels, is part of the new suite of Copilot Plus PC enhancements. The latest update also brings AI-assisted upgrades to Paint and the Snipping Tool, offering more advanced and intuitive user experiences.

The Notepad feature, called “Write,” enables users to draft content by entering a prompt or to enhance selected text with AI assistance. Users can access the feature through a right-click on the desired text or insertion point, or by highlighting content they want the AI to expand on. After choosing the Write option from the Copilot menu, a prompt box appears for inputting instructions. The AI-generated response is inserted directly into the document, and users can then decide whether to keep, modify, or discard the suggestion. This tool was first spotted in test versions of Windows 11 earlier in the year.

“Write” joins previously tested AI functions in Notepad, such as “Summarize,” which produces overviews of document content, and “Rewrite,” which can adjust the tone, length, or phrasing of selected text.

In Microsoft Paint, the update introduces a Sticker generator. Accessible through the Copilot menu, this feature allows users to describe the kind of sticker they want, and Paint will generate a set of relevant options to use in their artwork or transfer to other programs. This complements existing AI features like Generative Fill, Generative Erase, and Cocreator, which turns sketches and text prompts into complete images.

Another enhancement is the new Object select tool in Paint, which uses AI to smartly identify and isolate specific elements, making image editing more efficient.

Windows 11’s Snipping Tool is also receiving improvements with a new “Perfect screenshot” button. When using the rectangular selection tool, AI will automatically adjust the capture area to better frame key content. However, users still retain manual control for final adjustments before capturing the screenshot. The tool now also includes a Color picker that displays HEX, RGB, or HSL color values beneath an eyedropper icon, with zoom support for increased precision.

To access Notepad’s AI Write feature, users must be signed in with a Microsoft account. Like other AI-powered tools in Windows 11, it operates on a credits system, though Microsoft has yet to reveal pricing details if fees are introduced.
