Amazon Studios to Produce New ‘Joseph of Egypt’ Bible Series

Amazon MGM Studios is expanding its collaboration with Dallas Jenkins, the creator of “The Chosen,” by developing a series focused on the Biblical character Joseph and his experiences in Egypt.

Jenkins will serve as an executive producer for the series, named “Joseph of Egypt,” through his 5&2 Studios. Craig Wright is set to write and also be an executive producer for this project, which is currently in the development phase.

The official logline for the series reads, “Betrayed by envious brothers, Joseph surpasses all expectations and ascends to remarkable power in Egypt, becoming second only to Pharaoh. However, when his past resurfaces, he faces the ultimate challenge.”

In the Book of Genesis, Joseph is the son of Jacob and Rachel, who is sold into slavery in Egypt by his siblings. Nevertheless, his talent for accurately interpreting the Pharaoh’s dreams, which spares Egypt from a devastating famine, grants him favor and a high position. His narrative has been depicted on screen many times, and it also inspired the famous musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”

The series is part of the multi-dimensional agreement between Jenkins and 5&2 with Amazon MGM Studios, which was disclosed in February alongside Amazon’s acquisition of exclusive U.S. streaming rights and a theatrical release for new episodes of “The Chosen.” In a September 2024 interview with Variety, Jenkins unveiled his intentions for a Joseph series and a multi-season narrative focused on Moses.

This also signifies the most recent Biblical series that Amazon has been associated with lately. In addition to “The Chosen” and the upcoming “Joseph of Egypt,” Amazon Prime Video is currently showcasing the drama series “House of David.” This series narrates the tale of King David and debuted in February, quickly securing a renewal for a second season. “House of David” is produced by The Wonder Project, where Jenkins acts as a special adviser.

Wright is well-acquainted with religious dramas, having previously developed the successful OWN series “Greenleaf,” which took place in a Memphis megachurch. He also co-created the FX show “Tyrant” and the ABC drama “Dirty Sexy Money.” His writing portfolio includes notable shows like “Lost” and “Six Feet Under,” as well as the film “Mr. Peabody & Sherman.”

5&2 Studios is represented by CAA, while Wright is represented by WME and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
