Jesus Ferreira, a striker, became the first player on the United States men’s national team to record consecutive hat tricks in international competition when he scored three goals in the first half against Trinidad and Tobago.
The six joined goals arrived in a 88-minute time frame at the Gold Cup, with the initial three coming on Wednesday against St. Kitts and Nevis in St. Louis, as the U.S. traveled past T&T 6-0 to win its gathering on objective contrast subsequent to completing level on focuses with Jamaica in Gathering A.
“I’m happy. I’m excited,” Ferreira said after the game. “Obviously, this is a team objective. I wouldn’t be able to score goals without my teammates putting me in situations where I can score goals.
“So, from the beginning, we knew that this game was going to be intense. We have to bring the intensity, we have to be the team that can set the tempo and I think we did that.”
Along with Landon Donovan, the USMNT’s joint leading scorer, Ferreira became only the second player in the team’s history to score three hat tricks in a single season.
According to research conducted by ESPN Stats & Information, no other player, regardless of country, has achieved multiple Gold Cup hat tricks in their career.
“When I see his movement and his confidence in the penalty box, you can tell that the game has slowed down for him,” U.S. interim coach B.J. Callaghan said. “All of the work that he’s doing, leading our line defensively, dropping down, helping buildup play, for me he’s having a really complete tournament.”
Ferreira gave the U.S. the lead in the fourteenth moment from a DeJuan Jones help and multiplied the lead in the 38th moment before a punishment in stoppage time finished the full go-around.
The United States won 6-0 thanks to goals from Cade Cowell, Gianluca Busio, and Brandon Vazquez in the second half. The team will now wait for Tuesday’s Group D results to find out who it will play in the quarterfinals.
