When the Chennai Super Kings played Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday, MS Dhoni, a player who has endured through the ages, achieved the milestone of 400 T20 games. His outstanding T20 career has seen him score 7566 runs at a strike rate of 135.90, helping lead CSK to five Indian Premier League wins and captaining India to the 2007 T20 World Cup success.

Dhoni is 44 years old, so his batting skills may not be at their best, but he still has lightning-fast reflexes behind the stumps and owns the record for the most stumpings in the format with 34.

In the IPL 2025 season, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is once again heading CSK after regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined for the rest of the campaign due to an elbow fracture.

Dhoni’s comeback as captain this season was the first since the IPL 2023 final in Ahmedabad, where Ravindra Jadeja secured CSK’s fifth IPL victory with a six and a four in the final two balls. Dhoni had stepped back from leadership responsibilities after giving Gaikwad the captaincy at the beginning of the previous season, but he still played a significant role with the bat and behind the scenes.

When CSK played the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati earlier this season, Gaikwad, who was captaining the team in the 2025 Indian Premier League, was hit in the right forearm. After an elbow fracture was discovered via scans, his season was essentially over.

In a record 239 games, including all five of the team’s championship victories, Dhoni has captained CSK. Midway through the 2022 season, Dhoni regained his position after briefly relinquishing the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja due to poor results.
