Flipkart, one of India’s leading e-commerce companies, has officially ended its work-from-home (WFH) policy, making it one of the last major digital-era firms in the sector to take this step. Unlike its competitors such as Meesho, Amazon, Blinkit, and Zepto-where most employees have already resumed working from the office full-time-Flipkart had maintained a hybrid model for an extended period. However, this has now changed as the Walmart-owned company has asked its entire workforce to return to the office five days a week.
The shift marks a significant transition for Flipkart, which, like many other companies, had adopted remote work during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. The flexibility of WFH had been extended for several years, but the company gradually started rolling it back. Initially, it was the senior leadership-primarily vice presidents and higher-ups-who were requested to be more physically present in office spaces. Now, the policy applies to employees across all departments and job levels.
According to sources familiar with the development, the return-to-office plan is being implemented in a phased manner over the coming months, giving teams time to adjust to the transition. While the overarching directive is to return to the office full-time, there are certain exceptions based on job profiles or roles that inherently require remote or field-based work. Flipkart has also retained some flexibility by allowing employees to utilize a limited number of WFH days per year, offering them some breathing room for occasional remote work.
Confirming the update, a Flipkart spokesperson stated that the vast majority of their workforce, including contractual and gig workers-especially those in on-ground and operational roles-have continued working from their designated physical locations throughout the years. The new policy aims to align the rest of the organization with this model, fostering better collaboration and communication in a structured office environment.
