Lexus is giving its popular ES sedan a bold transformation for its upcoming eighth-generation release. The 2026 Lexus ES will feature an edgier, more streamlined exterior and a significant platform overhaul that supports both hybrid and fully electric powertrains, marking a pivotal step in the brand’s journey toward electrification.
When the new ES was unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show, it became the second all-electric car in Lexus’s lineup following the newly updated RZ, demonstrating the company’s strong commitment to changing up its lineup. The most recent ES design is largely based on the LF-ZC concept that was presented at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show. It features a futuristic take on Lexus’s iconic “spindle” grille, bold character lines, a unique L-shaped LED daytime light, and a sharply curved rear that exudes a contemporary, sporty look. Lexus has also teased a broader rebranding effort set to be unveiled at a global mobility event in October.
The 2026 ES is specially modified to handle the requirements of electric and hybrid systems built on an upgraded version of Toyota’s TNGA GA-K platform. With enhanced structural integrity, this revamped chassis improves both stability and comfort. The 350h hybrid version is powered by a more efficient 2.5-liter engine paired with a larger battery pack and now includes an all-wheel-drive option-a first for the ES lineup.
In order to maintain interior room and passenger comfort, the platform enables a larger battery to be put beneath the floor for the electric versions, the ES 350e (front-wheel drive) and ES 500e (all-wheel drive). The ES 350e with nineteen-inch wheels will have a driving range of up to 300 miles on a full charge as per Lexus.
With a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 14-inch central touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the 2026 ES has an elegant and high-tech cabin. The cabin also includes 3D-printed trim inspired by sustainable bamboo, customizable ambient lighting, and an immersive Mark Levinson audio system. Dual Bluetooth connectivity enables users to link two smartphones simultaneously.
The updated Lexus ES is scheduled to hit global markets, including the United States, before March 2026. Around the same time, Lexus is also expected to unveil a new electric vehicle, possibly built on a forthcoming three-row SUV platform developed by parent company Toyota-underscoring Lexus’s increasing commitment to electric vehicle innovation.
