‘Station 19’ series renewed for season 6 at ABC

ABC has announced that “Station 19” will return for a sixth season ahead of its presentations at the Television Critics Association’s virtual press tour on Tuesday.

Just one day after its Ellen Pompeo-led parent show was picked up for Season 19, the “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff series was revived for Season 6. The showrunner of “Station 19,” Krista Vernoff, will return for the upcoming season of the broadcast drama.

“Station 19” is a documentary that follows a crew of brave Seattle firemen as they risk their lives and hearts to save others. The series, which is executive produced by Shonda Rhimes, takes us inside the gritty, close-knit, and sometimes heartbreaking world of the city’s bravest first responders.

Krista Vernoff, who has been executive producer/showrunner on Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 since 2019, will stay on for the 2022-23 season. Since taking over the firefighter drama, Vernoff has resurrected Station 19, improving ratings with frequent crossovers with Grey’s Anatomy and integrated storytelling. The two shows have been renewed together on a regular basis due to their tight ties.

Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 have received ABC’s first season renewals, which is fitting. Grey’s Anatomy has remained ABC’s top series in adults 18-49 for the past eighteen seasons, while Station 19 has risen to second place thanks to its Thursday companion. After 35 days of viewing on traditional and digital platforms, the drama about first responders had a 2.17 rating among adults 18-49, up 234 percent from its debut Live+Same Day rating.

Andy Herrera is played by Jaina Lee Ortiz, Ben Warren is played by Jason George, Robert Sullivan is played by Boris Kodjoe, Jack Gibson is played by Grey Damon, Victoria Hughes is played by Barrett Doss, Travis Montgomery is played by Jay Hayden, Maya Bishop is played by Danielle Savre, Carina DeLuca is played by Stefania Spampinato, and Theo Ruiz is played by Carlos Miranda.

“It’s a privilege to tell stories of our heroic first responders, who on our show and in real life put their lives on the line every day to keep us all safe,” Vernoff said. “I’m so grateful to Disney and ABC for the early pickup for season six of ‘Station 19.’ It’s a tribute to the incredible work of our talented cast, crew, writers and creative team, as well as the dedication of our loyal fans who tune in every week.”

Craig Erwich, president, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment, added: “The riveting storytelling and passionate fan base that ‘Station 19’ continues to cultivate is a testament to the unrelenting dedication of Krista Vernoff and the incredibly talented cast and crew. Coupled with yesterday’s renewal of ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ the return of ‘Station 19’ ensures more crossover opportunities and a thrilling night of appointment television.”

Stacy McKee is the creator of the series. Executive producers include Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers. ABC Signature, a division of Disney Television Studios, is responsible for the production of Station 19.
