Ruth E. Carter is the first African woman to win several Oscar awards

Ruth E. Carter, a costume designer, recently became the first Black woman to win two Oscars.

Carter won her second Oscar for outfit plan for “Dark Puma: Wakanda for all time. She won an Oscar for her work on the first “Black Panther” movie in 2019, making her the first Black woman to do so.

Carter thanked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in her acceptance speech for “recognizing this superhero that is a Black woman.”

In tribute to the Black women she has dressed in her work, Carter said, wearing a striking goldenrod gown, “She endures, she loves, she overcomes.” She portrays every woman in this movie. My mother is her.

Carter informed the audience that her 101-year-old mother passed away earlier this week.

She said, “This film prepared me for this moment,” then referred to Chadwick Boseman, the late star of “Black Panther,” who passed away in 2020, and asked him to “please take care of mom.”

The well-known costume designer was previously up for an Oscar for her work on “Malcolm X” by Spike Lee and “Amistad” by Steven Spielberg.

Only actors Denzel Washington and Mahershala Ali, as well as sound mixers Willie D. Burton and Russell Williams II, have won multiple Oscars in competitive categories.
