The National Hockey League (NHL) has officially announced that Matvei Michkov, a forward for the Philadelphia Flyers, has been selected for the 2024-25 NHL All-Rookie Team.
Michkov becomes the 11th player in Flyers history to receive All-Rookie Team recognition, joining notable names such as Shayne Gostisbehere (2015-16), Joni Pitkanen (2003-04), Brian Boucher (1999-00), Simon Gagne (1999-00), Janne Niinimaa (1996-97), Chris Therien (1994-95), Mikael Renberg (1993-94), Ron Hextall (1986-87), Thomas Eriksson (1983-84), and Pelle Lindbergh (1982-83).
At just 20 years old (born 12/9/2004), Michkov concluded the season with an impressive tally of 26 goals and 37 assists, totaling 63 points across 80 games. He led all NHL rookies in goals and overtime goals (3), while also tying for second in overall points. His three overtime goals placed him alongside Sidney Crosby and Rick Nash for the most by a teenager. On the power play, he tied for the highest number of goals (8) and ranked third in power play points (17) among rookies. Furthermore, he achieved the highest number of even strength points among rookies with 46.
As the Flyers’ seventh overall pick in the 2023 draft, Michkov made a significant impact in his rookie season, becoming the eighth Flyers rookie to surpass 60 points in a season, the first since Mikael Renberg in 1993-94 (82 points). He also made history as the first Flyers player aged 20 or younger to hit the 50-point milestone since Simon Gagne in 2000-01 (54 points). In the last three decades, only one other Flyers rookie—Matt Read in 2011–12—has achieved three or more three-point games in a single season, a milestone that Michkov matched this year.
Michkov was recognized as the NHL rookie of the month twice, in October and February, making him the first rookie to earn this distinction twice in the current season. He is also the only Flyers rookie in the last 30 years to achieve this honor.
The other forwards are Cutter Gauthier (Anaheim Ducks) and Macklin Celebrini (San Jose Sharks), the defenseman are Denton Mateychuck (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Lane Hutson (Montreal Canadiens), and the goalie, Dustin Wolf (Calgary Flames), was selected to the 2024–25 All-Rookie Team. At the end of the regular season, the Professional Hockey Writers Association held the voting.
