In preparation for the third film of the famous Top Gun franchise, Paramount hopes to rev up the engine once more.
Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger is working on a script for a potential new Maverick film, and reliable sources indicate that Maverick director Joe Kosinski will also be directing. Kurger’s involvement was initially revealed by Puck. Reuniting Tom Cruise with his next-generation co-stars Glen Powell and Miles Teller is the goal.
This news was released a few days after Warner Bros. Discovery revealed that Cruise had inked a non-exclusive contract to star in and create films for the studio. Despite not having a contract there, Paramount has produced the most of the actor’s recent motion pictures. The truth is that this sequel has been covertly in development since late autumn, despite the fact that some may see the Top Gun revelation as a tit for tat in the competition for Cruise headlines.
Steven Spielberg credited Cruise for rescuing the theatre industry after it suffered significant harm by the coronavirus pandemic after Maverick performed astronomically well at the box office in 2022, grossing $1.5 billion worldwide. The film came out decades after Tony Scott’s 1986 Top Gun, which made Cruise a household name in the film industry.
Not too soon, at least not when it comes to the next Top Gun movie. To keep him busy until the film’s May 2025 premiere, Cruise is presently working on an eighth Mission: Impossible picture. And Maverick’s flight was delayed by a few years during development. But, this development confirms what already became clear this week: Cruise is still a highly sought-after star, and studios will continue to compete for his time and attention for years to come.
