Meta Brings AI-Powered Ray-Ban Glasses to India with Real-Time Translation and Camera Access

The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses from Meta Platforms will soon be sold in India in addition to other foreign countries including Mexico and the United Arab Emirates, the company has formally stated. These stylish wearable devices were initially launched in the US in September 2023 and have gradually expanded to more countries, but are now making their debut in India for the first time.

Fashion and cutting-edge technology are combined in the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses, which were developed in partnership with the eyeglasses behemoth EssilorLuxottica. A 12MP ultra-wide camera, built-in microphones, and open-ear speakers are features of the cheapest model, which costs $299 in the US (about Rs. 25,000). These features allow users to take photos, listen to audio, and engage in conversations seamlessly while on the move.

Alongside the broader market rollout, Meta is also bringing new designs and enhanced functionalities to the glasses. New styles include variants like Skyler Shiny Chalk Grey with Transitions Sapphire lenses, Skyler Shiny Black with G15 Green lenses, and a Clear-lens option in Shiny Black. These additions aim to offer more personalization and aesthetic appeal to potential users.

A notable upgrade is the global rollout of live translation features, which were initially available only in the US and Canada. Now available in all supported markets, this tool enables real-time speech translation between English and Spanish, French, or Italian. Users can activate it simply by saying, “Hey Meta, start live translation.” The smart glasses can then play the translated speech through their speakers and display a transcription of the conversation. Additionally, downloadable language packs now allow this functionality to work offline, without requiring Wi-Fi connectivity.

The glasses’ interaction with Instagram is also being improved by Meta. Users can now send and receive direct messages, photos, voice, and video calls via simple voice commands such as “Hey Meta, send a message to Lisa on Instagram.” This elevates the glasses from just wearable tech to a hands-free communication tool.

Music streaming compatibility is expanding too. Users outside of the US and Canada may now listen to music from Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music using Ray-Ban Meta Glasses. They can even use voice commands to ask inquiries about the songs that are playing.

Another significant enhancement is to the Live AI feature, which allows Meta AI to access the glasses’ camera feed in real-time. With this upgrade, the AI assistant can respond to contextual queries about the user’s surroundings and carry on more natural, flowing conversations without requiring the “Hey Meta” activation phrase. This feature is also being introduced in more EU regions.
