Microsoft is currently experimenting with a new voice-activated feature for Copilot Voice, aimed at making interactions even more seamless for Windows 11 users. This upcoming functionality will allow users to initiate conversations with Copilot simply by saying the phrase “Hey Copilot!”-bringing it in line with voice assistants like Apple’s Siri, Google Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa, and Microsoft’s former Cortana, which Copilot has now officially replaced.
For those enrolled in the Windows Insider Program, the feature is gradually becoming available through the latest Copilot app update. To try it out, users need to opt in and manually enable the feature in their system settings. While Copilot already supports launching via a dedicated keyboard key or key combination, this voice wake command introduces a more natural and hands-free way to begin interacting with the app. It also builds on the recent rollout of a more conversational and intuitive Copilot Voice experience designed to handle more fluid and dynamic commands.
According to Microsoft’s blog post, not all Insiders will receive access to the feature at once. The rollout is happening progressively across global testers, but only those who have set English as their primary display language will be eligible at this stage. Users should make sure that their Copilot app version is 1.25051.10.0 or higher in order to confirm that they have the most recent version.
When the “Hey Copilot” speech function is activated, users will see a floating microphone interface at the bottom of their screen along with a chime sound to let them know Copilot is listening.
The company clarified in the FAQ section that the new voice detection system uses an on-device wake word detector with a 10-second rolling audio buffer. This puts user privacy first by making sure that no audio is transferred to the cloud or saved locally. The wake word can be recognized even without an internet connection; however, actual functionality beyond the wake trigger still requires online access to support cloud-based processing for Copilot Voice to respond effectively.
