Bollywood icon Aamir Khan is set to reunite with acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani for a biographical film centered on the life of Dadasaheb Phalke, widely recognized as the Father of Indian Cinema. After working together on 3 Idiots in 2009 and PK in 2014, Khan and Hirani will work together on this upcoming film for the third time. The announcement follows closely on the heels of media speculation that South star Jr NTR is also teaming up with director SS Rajamouli for a separate biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke, a project that will reportedly require the actor to undergo a significant physical transformation to portray the cinematic legend. A press release from the makers of the Aamir Khan-Rajkumar Hirani project revealed that the film is scheduled to begin production in October. Khan is expected to commence his preparations for the role following the release of his latest film Sitaare Zameen Par, which hits theatres on June 20. The biopic will be set during the era of India’s independence movement and will trace the remarkable life of a visionary who overcame numerous obstacles to lay the foundation for what has become the world’s largest indigenous film industry. The screenplay is the result of four years of meticulous development, with Hirani collaborating with his long-time writing partner Abhijat Joshi and writers Hindukush Bharadwaj and Avishkar Bharadwaj. The project has also gained the support of Dadasaheb Phalke’s grandson, Chandrashekhar Srikrishna Pusalkar, who has contributed valuable personal insights and anecdotes about Phalke’s life. Additionally, AI-driven designs reflecting the film’s historical era have been created by VFX studios based in Los Angeles, ensuring authenticity and visual depth. The founder in Indian film, Dadasaheb Phalke was born Dhundiraj Govind Phalke. The first silent feature film in India, Raja Harishchandra, was directed by him in 1913. In 1912, the Phalke Films Company was established by him. Over nearly two decades, Phalke created more than 90 full-length films and 27 short films, with notable works including Lanka Dahan, Shri Krishna Janma, and Kaliya Mardan. His legacy is immortalized by the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, instituted by the Indian government in 1969, which continues to be the most prestigious recognition in Indian cinema for lifetime achievement.
