Milly Alcock, the star of House of the Dragon, is the girl of steel in SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW

Following a worldwide casting call, James Gunn has discovered his Supergirl.

Milly Alcock, star of House of the Dragon, has been cast as Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, in Gunn and Peter Safran’s future DC Universe, which will formally launch in Summer 2025 with Superman: Legacy, according to a report published today by Deadline.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which playwright Ana Nogueira is currently drafting a script for, will star Alcock.

The Australian actress finally won the highly sought-after role over competitors Meg Donnelly (Legion of Superheroes; Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One) and Emilia Jones (CODA; Locke & Key) after a recent screen test.

Since then, Gunn has verified the casting, saying, “This is correct. Being a young performer with such incredible skill, I’m thrilled to have Milly join the DCU. Yes, I had seen her in House of the Dragon before, but her diverse range of screen tests and auditions for #Supergirl really caught my attention. She is the embodiment of @tomking_tk, @bilquis, and Ana Nogueira’s concept of Kara.”

Supergirl is expected to make her screen debut in Superman: Legacy, which stars David Corenswet, next year. However, DHD warns that’s not necessarily the case, though they don’t completely rule it out either.

Before assuming a leading role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the trade does mention that she is anticipated to make her screen debut in another DC project. It is unclear, though, if this is Superman: Legacy, which is scheduled to begin filming in Atlanta in the spring.

“In our series, we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” Gunn previously said, giving fans an idea of what to expect from Alcock’s version of Supergirl. She’s not quite the Supergirl we’re used to seeing; she’s considerably more hardcore.”

Superman: Legacy will feature David Corenswet (Clark Kent/Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Edi Gathegi (Michael Holt/Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner/Green Lantern), Anthony Carrigan (Rex Mason/Metamorpho), María Gabriela de Faría (Angela Spica/Engineer), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), and Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen).

Besides her breakthrough performance in the critically acclaimed HBO series House of the Dragon as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Alcock’s other credits include Fighting Season, Pine Gap, Upright, Reckoning, The Gloaming, Les Norton, A Place to Call Home, Janet King, High Life, and Wonderland.

Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which will open the new DC Universe, will feature the motion pictures Superman: Legacy, The Authority, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Swamp Thing. The television shows Creature Commandos, Waller, Lanterns, Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, Peacemaker, and Arkham will also be included in the first chapter.
