Microsoft reports investing much in artificial intelligence in Spain

US digital giant Microsoft has announced it will spend billions of dollars on an artificial intelligence data center in Spain, adding to a major investment project planned in Germany.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Microsoft executive Brad Smith announced Monday an investment of 1.95 billion euros ($2.1 billion) over two years. The funds will be used to expand AI and cloud infrastructure, Smith wrote on online platform X (formerly Twitter).

Last week, Mr Smith announced that Germany would invest almost €3.3 billion over two years to significantly expand his data center capacity for AI and cloud computing applications.

His largest single investment in Microsoft’s 40-year history in Germany, it also includes an AI training program expected to involve up to 1.2 million people.

Last November, Microsoft pledged to invest £2.5 billion ($3.15 billion) in AI in the UK by 2026. A month earlier, Smith had pledged A$5 billion ($3.26 billion) to invest in AI during a visit to Australia.
