Josh McCown, a veteran quarterback in the NFL, has been hired by the Panthers as QB coach

The journeyman NFL career of Josh McCown continues, this time as a coach.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network Insiders said on Friday that the Carolina Panthers have hired McCown to be their quarterbacks coach. The hire, along with Dom Capers’ appointment as senior defensive assistant, was made public by the team later.

McCown has been interested in coaching in the league for a long time. He will work under head coach Frank Reich. He interviewed for the Texans’ head coaching position despite his lack of experience in 2021, before Houston hired David Culley, and in 2022, before Lovie Smith won the position.

The former quarterback had a career with nine teams, one of which was Carolina, where he spent two years in 2008-09. He turned 40 in 2019 and had 17,731 passing yards, 98 touchdowns, and 82 interceptions in his career.

McCown will be tasked with improving the performance of a position that has been disappointing for the Panthers in recent years, regardless of whether it is a quarterback who is already on the roster, like Matt Corral, Sam Darnold, or PJ Walker, or a starter who has yet to be acquired.
