Google doodle celebrates Singapore’s National Day

The Google Doodle for today honours Singapore’s National Day. On this date in 1965, Singapore formally achieved independence from the Federation of Malaysia.

The Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid, Singapore’s national flower, is depicted in today’s artwork. The kind of orchid chosen as Singapore’s National Flower was chosen for its vibrant colours, hardiness, and resilience—characteristics that capture the spirit of Singapore. Although Vanda Miss Joaquim is still the name given to the flower in common usage, recent taxonomic research found that the national flower’s parents belonged to the genus Papilionanthe; as a result, the flower’s official scientific name was changed to “Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim.”

The biggest event in the nation is the annual National Day Parade. Singaporeans either attend the parade’s processions in person or watch the event’s national broadcast. The Singapore Armed Forces practise free-fall parachute displays and vehicle demonstrations in the months preceding the event. In addition to song and dance performances, the parades typically include an aerial display with helicopters and jet planes. A stunning display of fireworks decorates the night sky as a finale. On the entire island, people spend the day at picnics, carnivals, and concerts.

Happy National Day, Singapore!
