Bill Gates gave away $6 billion but still the fifth-richest person in the world

Despite giving shares worth more than $6 billion last week to his charity organisation, Bill Gates is still the fifth-richest person in the world, according to statistics from Bloomberg and Forbes.

According to SEC filings, Gates gave the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation shares of Canadian National Railway Company valued at over $5.2 billion.

According to documents filed on Friday, the co-founder of Microsoft also donated to the charity shares in Deere & Co. valued at $995 million on Thursday.

The private non-profit company received more than 3 million shares that were transferred from Gates’ investment vehicle, Cascade Investment LLC.

Bloomberg estimates that Gates’ current net worth is $112 billion, putting him behind Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Bernard Arnault, and India’s Gautam Adani.

The philanthropist promised last week on Twitter to donate $20 billion to the nonprofit organisation this month and to eventually donate “virtually all” of his money to it.

Gates predicted in a tweet last week that he will someday drop off the list of the richest individuals in the world.

By 2026, the foundation plans to expand its annual gifts to $9 billion, as promised earlier this month.

The foundation’s endowment has now reached around $70 billion, according to its website, including a $3.1 billion yearly donation from Warren Buffett.

In the Twitter conversation from last week, Gates said, “I have an obligation to return my resources to society in ways that have the greatest impact for reducing suffering and improving lives.” “And I hope others in positions of great wealth and privilege will step up in this moment too.”

If Melinda French Gates and her ex-husband are unable to collaborate, she may resign as co-chair in a year, the foundation announced last year.

There was no one at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation accessible for comment.
