Some users appear to be experiencing a YouTube outage, however it appears to be a problem with ad blockers rather than the platform itself.
Since 2023, YouTube has been fighting ad blockers and has maintained that using them is against the platform’s rules. However, the usage of ad blockers on YouTube is still so common that problems that affect these users may appear to be YouTube-related.
That appears to be the case right now. Users soon discovered that ad blockers were to fault for what appeared to be a partial outage on YouTube earlier this morning according to a surge on DownDetector. When attempting to load YouTube, affected users saw a largely blank webpage, as shown in the picture below.
Some users attempted to access YouTube using different browsers, as would be the case with any outage, and discovered that the platform began operating once more. What has changed? blockers of ads.
There are enough user reports of switching from a browser with an ad blocker set to one that doesn’t interfere with advertisements and finding that YouTube instantly resumed functioning, even though it’s difficult to conclude that these problems were exclusively the result of ad blockers.
We’ve encountered YouTube problems linked to users who have active ad blockers before. Ad blockers have been the reason for sharply declining view counts on the site, and there have been instances in the last year alone where videos were loading poorly while they were in use. This most recent problem appears to be the closest to the latter.
Notably, there was another problem with YouTube Shorts overnight where the user interface (UI) surrounding the video, such as the description, the like button, and comments, was not displaying correctly. That implies that there might have been an issue on YouTube’s end, but it seems to have been resolved this morning.
