Samsung has unveiled its new Odyssey gaming monitor lineup at gamescom, featuring innovative eye-tracking technology that transforms 2D visuals into glasses-free 3D. The Odyssey 3D, expected to be released globally by the end of the year, promises users the ability to easily toggle between 2D and 3D modes according to their preference. This feature could attract gamers who are curious about 3D gaming but hesitant to fully commit to it.
Marking Samsung’s debut in the 3D gaming monitor market, the Odyssey 3D was first hinted at during CES earlier this year. The monitors will be available in 27-inch and 37-inch models, both of which boast a 4K QLED panel with a 165Hz refresh rate. They also feature a rapid 1-millisecond response time and come equipped with AMD FreeSync technology. For connectivity, the monitors include a DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 ports, ensuring versatile connection options. Additionally, the design includes a stand that allows for tilting and height adjustments, enabling users to position the monitor for optimal 3D viewing.
The glasses-free 3D experience is achieved through the integration of a lenticular lens-a specialized component that directs different images to each eye-paired with a built-in eye-tracking camera and view mapping technology. This combination continuously adjusts the image to maintain accurate depth perception, creating a Stereoscopic 3D effect. While this technology is designed for single-user viewing, which might be seen as a limitation, it is particularly well-suited for gamers. Similar technology has been used by Acer in its SpatialLabs laptops and monitors, and early experiences suggest that the 3D effect is both impressive and enjoyable, offering a dynamic experience without the need for special glasses.
However, one key detail remains under wraps: the price. Samsung has not yet disclosed pricing information, but based on the cost of similar products from Acer and Samsung’s past Odyssey monitors, it’s likely that the Odyssey 3D monitors will come with a premium price tag.
