Apple is expected to introduce the biggest update to its native virtual assistant, Siri, since its launch at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2024. There are rumors that the Cupertino-based tech giant may present new features for its smartphones and highlight its artificial intelligence (AI) approach. According to a recent rumor, the main goal of this update is to make Siri smarter and more effective. It is expected that Apple will accomplish this by using either its own AI models or purchasing them from an outside source.
The New York Times reports that Apple’s top executives came to the conclusion last year that Siri needs a significant makeover in order to stay competitive. The ability of AI chatbots, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, to perform a number of different jobs, led to this realization. In particular, it was thought to be a major accomplishment that language understanding understood context, allowing users to ask ambiguous questions and still receive precise answers. According to people with knowledge of the situation, Apple is swiftly working on giving Siri artificial intelligence skills.
According to the report, improving Siri is now a top priority at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters and is considered a “once-in-a-decade” project for the business. It is expected that the new Siri will make its debut on June 10 during the WWDC 2024 event. Two major areas of improvement for Siri were also noted in the report: conversational language and increased task adaptability. But Apple wants to make sure that Siri stays unique and doesn’t turn into simply another AI-powered chatbot.
Apple WWDC 2024: Upcoming Improvements:
Rather than becoming an all-purpose chatbot that can write essays and poems, it’s more likely that Siri’s talents will be refined and concentrated on the things that it already does, though with major improvements. For example, users might be able to ask follow-up questions—a feature that Siri does not currently have—without having to repeat everything. In addition, Siri may be able to perform additional tasks on other devices; however, the specifics of these enhancements are still unknown.
According to reports, Apple intends to keep Siri private by operating it exclusively on-device and using the neural processing unit (NPU) on-device for processing in order to reduce latency problems. Taking into account earlier claims indicating Apple is developing AI chips for its data centers, this choice is significant.
The NY Times report claims that cost-effectiveness is the main factor for Apple’s decision not to use cloud servers. For example, according to reports, OpenAI pays 12 cents (about 16 rupees) for each 1,000 words produced by ChatGPT because of cloud computing costs. Apple may be able to save these costs by maintaining Siri’s features inside the product.
