Tesla appears to be gearing up for the public debut of its Cybercab, with some reports suggesting an Austin launch could happen as early as this month.
Earlier this week, The Information reported that Tesla is preparing to roll out the Cybercab publicly in Austin, with a possible launch window in August. Adding fuel to the speculation, Tesla’s official Robotaxi account on X hinted that the announcement is imminent, telling followers that anyone who takes a ride in the current robotaxi fleet (made up of Model Y vehicles) will be entered into a chance to attend the Cybercab’s launch event — “more rides, better odds,” the account said, though it didn’t share further details.
A follow-up post from the same account revealed that contest winners will be notified by 9 a.m. on August 25 — a date that may also coincide with additional details about the launch itself.
The stakes are high for Tesla here. The Cybercab is currently the only major new vehicle on the company’s public product roadmap, and it’s unlike anything else in the lineup: a two-seat vehicle built specifically for autonomous ride-hailing, with no steering wheel at all.
According to The Information, Tesla’s rollout plan starts small — offering rides to its own employees on public streets in Austin before expanding the Cybercab into the broader robotaxi service. That plan faces a regulatory hurdle, though: current rules don’t permit commercial robotaxi operations using vehicles without steering wheels, unless a special exemption is granted. Precedent exists — Amazon’s Zoox secured approval to run a limited fleet of steering-wheel-free autonomous taxis in Las Vegas and San Francisco.
Regulation may not even be the biggest obstacle. A more pressing question is whether Tesla’s self-driving technology is mature enough to support Cybercabs at scale. The robotaxi service currently runs on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system, which — while capable — has shown notable shortcomings in real-world testing. For now, Tesla’s robotaxi operations remain confined to select areas of Austin, Dallas, and Houston in Texas, along with parts of Miami, Orlando, and Tampa in Florida.
