Spotify has begun testing a new feature called About the Song, giving listeners extra details about the tracks they are playing. The feature is currently available in beta and can be found by Premium users when they scroll down in the Now Playing screen.
About the Song provides short, swipeable cards that share background information, trivia, and context about individual tracks. These details are pulled from third-party sources and presented through machine-generated summaries. Each card includes source citations, allowing users to see where the information comes from. For now, the feature is limited to a small selection of songs, though Spotify plans to expand it in the future. The company has not said when it will leave beta or whether free users will gain access.
The launch reflects Spotify’s continued focus on adding more depth to its streaming platform beyond basic music playback. In recent months, the company has introduced tools such as expanded Song Credits and SongDNA, which highlight songwriters, producers, and creative connections between artists.
Spotify also strengthened this effort in November 2025 by acquiring WhoSampled, a popular database that tracks song samples and musical influences. That purchase gives Spotify access to detailed sampling records, which can now be used to support features like SongDNA and About the Song.
Together, these updates show Spotify’s push to turn music streaming into a more informative and interactive experience for listeners.
