‘Scrubs’ Returns: New Season Confirmed with Original Cast

The group is coming together again.

Following years of fan speculation and teasing, ABC announced on July 10 that three of the original cast members of “Scrubs”—Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke—as well as series creator Bill Lawrence will be returning to the show.

An ABC press release states that the relaunch will make its broadcast TV premiere in the 2025–2026 season.

The hospital comedy reboot will see one-time interns JD (Braff) and Turk (Faison) “scrub in together for the first time in a long time,” according to the season’s logline. “Medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart, and some surprises along the way.”

“‘Scrubs’ means so very much to me. So excited for the chance to get the band back together,” Lawrence said in a statement.

Braff, Faison, Chalke, Neil Flynn (Janitor), Ken Jenkins (Chief of Medicine Dr. Bob Kelso), John C. McGinley (Dr. Perry Cox), and Judy Reyes (nurse Carla Espinosa) were among the cast members of the acclaimed comedy when it made its NBC debut in October 2001.

The program was ended after Season 9 in 2010 and relocated to ABC for Season 8. As the network brought in new actors, a number of the main cast members had smaller roles at the end of the show.

Since ABC shut down the show, the cast has remained in touch. Braff and Faison have co-hosted the “Scrubs” podcast “Fake Doctors, Real Friends” and have collaborated on T-Mobile advertisements.

The cast of “Scrubs” has been hinting at a comeback for years

The prospect of a “Scrubs” reunion was mentioned by Braff, Faison, Chalke, McGinley, Lawrence, Judy Reyes, and Neil Flynn during a panel at the ATX TV Festival in 2022.

At the time, Faison proposed that a reboot would need to be made into a film because of the cast’s and Lawrence’s busy schedules. Lawrence has since produced shows like “Ted Lasso” and “Shrinking.”

“We all would love to work together again,” Faison said. “(But) it can’t be a full season of a show. It would have to be a movie or something like that.”

Braff added that he would be “down” for a reunion if Lawrence is involved. Lawrence then confidently told fans: “We’re going to do it. You guys know we’re going to do it.”
