OpenAI has unveiled a new feature for ChatGPT called ‘deep research’ mode, designed to assist users with intricate multi-step research tasks online. This AI-powered agent delves into vast datasets to compile detailed reports, though questions remain about the accuracy and reliability of the information it generates. Deep Research is the latest addition to OpenAI’s expanding suite of AI capabilities, following last month’s launch of Operator AI, which focuses on browser-related tasks.
At the core of this feature is OpenAI’s cutting-edge o3 reasoning model, which is specifically optimized for analyzing web-based content, including text, images, and PDFs. By scouring extensive online resources, Deep Research aims to generate reports that closely resemble those crafted by human research analysts. Unlike standard ChatGPT searches that provide instant responses, queries in this mode require significantly more processing time, ranging from five to thirty minutes. Users receive a notification once the research is completed.
Currently, Deep Research only provides text-based output, but OpenAI has plans to enhance its functionality with embedded images, data visualizations, and other analytical elements in the near future. However, despite its advanced capabilities, this tool is not without limitations. Like other AI-driven research tools, Deep Research remains susceptible to hallucinations, meaning it may generate inaccurate or entirely fabricated information. OpenAI acknowledges these shortcomings, noting that the system struggles to differentiate between authoritative sources and unreliable rumors. Additionally, it often fails to communicate uncertainty effectively, which raises concerns about the credibility of its reports.
While users can manually verify the AI-generated citations to confirm the legitimacy of the research, doing so somewhat undermines the convenience of having an AI agent conduct the research in the first place. OpenAI, however, aims to refine this feature further by integrating access to specialized data sources, including subscription-based and internal resources, in an effort to enhance the reliability and personalization of the reports it produces.
