Nvidia and Apple are reportedly in talks to join OpenAI’s next funding round, a round that could value the ChatGPT maker at $100 billion.
If the deal goes through, it would be led by former OpenAI investor Thrive Capital, according to New York Times insiders. (Bloomberg first reported Nvidia’s involvement, while the WSJ broke the story on Apple’s potential interest.) Microsoft, which already owns 49% of OpenAI, could also be involved.
OpenAI needs capital. The company’s annual revenue reportedly topped $3.4 billion earlier this year, but it’s said to be losing $5 billion by the end of the year as it expands its AI training and staffing business.
OpenAI has ties to both companies. Its generative AI models run and are primarily trained on Nvidia GPUs. Apple agreed to integrate ChatGPT into iOS earlier this year as part of Apple’s upcoming suite of AI features, called “Apple Intelligence.”
