Another icon from the 1980s has vanished, much like Pudding Pops and Benetton sweaters. After four decades of informing Windows users about the unfortunate news of a PC crash, Microsoft’s notorious “blue screen of death” will soon be retired. But there’s no need to fret — a black screen of death will take its place, though it won’t feature the sorrowful emoticon face.
The notorious “blue screen of death” has been a staple since the very first Windows version in 1985. Its name comes from its vivid blue hue, serving as a critical error screen that appears on computers running the Microsoft Windows operating system when a crash occurs. The message displayed on the screen can differ, but it is occasionally accompanied by a frowning face represented by a colon and a left parenthesis. 🙁
According to Microsoft, the new black screen of death, which they refer to as a “simplified UI for unexpected restarts,” will start appearing later this summer on all Windows 11, version 24H2 devices.
The black screen of death will display the stop code along with the problematic system driver, enabling IT administrators to swiftly pinpoint the cause of the crash, instead of relying on debugging tools.
This change is more than just aesthetic; it is a component of Microsoft’s Windows Resiliency Initiative, aimed at enhancing the resilience and security of Windows systems. In a blog post released on Thursday, Microsoft stated that the updated black screen of death is intended to “streamline the unexpected restart experience” and assist in “quick machine recovery.” The goal is to minimize recovery time to just 2 seconds after a PC crash.
The Windows Resiliency Initiative was introduced in response to the CrowdStrike outage of 2024, which resulted in numerous businesses, airports, and government services experiencing system downtime. Over 8 million devices were affected.
For over four decades, the blue screen of death has become a part of pop culture, inspiring a dedicated subreddit and merchandise such as T-shirts featuring its iconic image.
