On Wednesday, Google revealed some positive news for Workspace users: All users will be able to utilize Vids, a video editing application, for free. It used to be a paid add-on. However, not all of Vids’ content is free. You will still have to pay if you want all the new AI-powered benefits.
Since Vids was a paid add-on, you may not have heard of it before, but according to Google, it has one million monthly active users. Having a video editor that is directly integrated with Google Drive will probably be useful now that it is available to all Workspace users for free. That should make a lot of people’s jobs easier.
If the various Google video tools were confusing to you, you could be forgiven. To set the record straight: For those who enjoy movies, there is Google Flow, a generative tool driven by AI. Naturally, Vids is a work-oriented video platform that has just added AI capabilities through Gemini. Additionally, Google Veo 3 is the model that underpins all of Google’s artificial intelligence video products.
Although the fact that Vids is now available to Workspaces users for free is significant, the main news, in terms of new features, is the addition of those AI offerings for business, enterprise, and paid AI plans exclusively.
What are those qualities of AI, then?
New AI features in Google Vids
The ability to turn photographs into brief, 8-second films with sound is Vids’ most intriguing new AI capability.
“This means you can upload a product shot, or company stock photography, and use a text prompt to create animated video clips with native audio that are aligned with your brand,” Google stated on its blog.
AI avatars are the other significant addition. For customers of Workspace, who are primarily utilizing the service for, well, work, that might not seem like much use at first. However, Google pointed out that users could upload a script and have an avatar deliver the message, which would be useful for demos or last-minute training videos.
The last significant AI-powered improvement is a transcription cleanup tool. I can attest to how beneficial that would be when you work as a journalist and do video interviews. Filler words like “umm” and awkward pauses are supposed to be eliminated by the AI-powered functionality. If your editor removes the filler automatically, you should record a video with significantly fewer takes.
These days, AI is being incorporated into everything, and it is predicted that videos will receive these advancements. Hopefully it helps some people have a little easier workday.
