The Federal Trade Commission is giving more than $126 million in refunds to players of Epic Games’ “Fortnite” who were “charged for unwanted purchases while playing the game.”
The new wave of payments, which the government agency disclosed Wednesday, raises the total amount of consumer refunds the FTC has given out in connection with its now-settled complaint against Epic over its billing methods to almost $200 million. In order to resolve the FTC’s accusations that the game firm employed “deceptive practices to trick players into making unwanted purchases,” Epic announced in December 2022 that it had agreed to pay $245 million.
In December 2024, the FTC paid out 629,344 refunds to “Fortnite” gamers, totaling over $72 million in the initial round. According to the FTC, gamers who submitted a legitimate claim will receive 969,173 checks and PayPal payouts in this second round between June 25 and June 26.
While PayPal receivers should redeem their refund money within 30 days, the FTC states that customers choose their chosen payment method when they filled out their first claim form and encourages check recipients to cash checks within 90 days.
The claim submission procedure for “Fortnite” players and their parents or guardians has been reopened.
At www.ftc.gov/fortnite, eligible consumers who have not yet filed a claim will now have until July 9, 2025, to do so, the FTC said.
Citing Epic’s original blog post announcing the settlement in December 2022, an Epic Games official declined to comment Thursday.
