Chrome Moves to a Two-Week Update Cycle to Strengthen Security

Google is speeding up the release schedule for its Chrome browser as it looks to respond more quickly to emerging security threats. Beginning with Chrome 153, the browser will move from its current four-week stable release cycle to a new two-week schedule across desktop, Android and iOS.

The change means Chrome users will receive new features, interoperability improvements, bug fixes and security updates more frequently. Instead of waiting up to a month for changes to reach the stable version, users will now see updates arrive every two weeks.

Google says the shorter release cycle is also designed to complement its evolving approach to browser security. The Chrome team has been using automated AI-powered tools based on Gemini to help identify and address vulnerabilities that could previously have taken longer to detect.

By reducing the time between discovering a security flaw, developing a fix and delivering that fix to users, Google aims to make Chrome better equipped to handle rapidly developing threats. The company also expects the shorter cycle to result in smaller updates, making them quicker to download and install.

Organizations that prefer not to adopt the new two-week schedule will still have another option. Chrome’s Extended Stable channel will continue to provide weekly security updates, while major feature updates will arrive every two months.

The new release schedule is already underway. Chrome 154 is scheduled to reach users on September 22, while the upcoming version is currently available through the beta channel for testing.
