Although it took a while, Apple eventually released the Vision Pro mixed reality headset a few months ago. The company hasn’t been able to sell many devices despite the early enthusiasm. It’s not in the mass-market price range to begin with, as its $3,499 price points indicate.
It has been stated that the business has been investigating ways to lower the cost of the headset. Another alternative under consideration would provide a far more cheap headset by essentially replicating what Samsung achieved with the Gear VR.
Apple’s upcoming headset may be influenced by Gear VR:
In 2015, Samsung launched the Gear VR headset for the first time. When you plugged in a device that was compatible, the headset controlled and served as an inertial measurement unit for rotational tracking, using the phone’s processing and display. It was a simple method of delivering a virtual reality experience, and it was effective. Before Samsung discontinued the Gear VR in 2018, more than 5 million units had been sold.
Given that the ordinary consumer cannot afford a $3,499 headset, Apple has a serious dilemma. According to reports, the corporation is developing a less expensive model with specs between $1,500 and $2,000 that would have an outdated CPU, fewer graphics capabilities, and inferior pass-through visual quality.
According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, Apple is apparently considering developing a version of the headset that requires an iPhone or Mac that is attached. If it produces one that is dependent on the iPhone, it would basically work on the same principle as the Gear VR, utilizing the phone’s processor and screens to power the virtual reality experience.
Customers’ costs may drop dramatically as a result, allowing Apple to include them in the Vision headset family. The business will have enough time once they’re in to progressively push them in the direction of the priciest headphones. Even if Samsung’s future plans for headsets are now unknown, it’s impressive to see how forward-thinking the Gear VR was.
